Plymouth pupils find global audience with engaging literacy project

LendMeYourLiteracy is creating a more literate world by providing teachers with the means to inspire young writers and give them a worldwide audience. They have now shared the work of over 25,000 published child authors. Sorted by age group, genre and topic, it is available to teachers all over the world for free.

Pupils at Mayflower Community Academy are some of the latest inductees into a global writing project. By working alongside the team at LendMeYourLiteracy, the primary school’s teachers are enabling the kids to publish their writing work online, thus receiving feedback from other pupils around the world. According to the Plymouth Herald, the organisation operates in over 100 countries.

The award-winning LendMeYourLiteracy has been running since just 2012, and works with teachers and pupils from Liverpool to Puerto la Cruz, Venezuela. Founded by teachers, the company boasts over 25,000 published child authors, and is available to every teacher for free.

"We made contact with the company because they enable pupils to 'publish' their writing online,” said headteacher David Sammels. "We are the first school in Plymouth to use the site. Our most recent results as a school have been outstanding and by using the LendMeYourLiteracy project, we are hoping to build on this to develop and support budding authors to produce their finest work for others to see.

"When the children learnt that their work will be published and read by others around the world, there was a real buzz around the place. I heard some pupils say 'Wow, I'm going to be an author!' and another said 'This is my best writing, yet!', which is great to hear. Now that we have a brand new national curriculum, one of the new buzzwords we use is 'mastery level'. This project will enable the children to achieve that mastery level by having their work published online."
