On Friday 28th October, Twitter will host the Digital Citizenship Summit launch event for US Media Literacy Week at their San Francisco headquarters. The Digital Citizenship Summit has a mission to unite people, organizations, and companies across the world committed to the safe, savvy, and ethical use of social media and tech. The all-day global event aims to work towards solutions, promote best practices, and empower citizens to “be the digital change”. The Digital Citizenship Summit on October 28th is an all-day event (from 09:00 PST / 16:00 BST to 17:00 PST / 00:00 BST) that features a diverse range of speakers and panelists from across the country and globe. The fast-paced event, a mix of talks and panels, works towards the one underlying question: ‘How can we be the digital change?’ Participants can also follow along and contribute by using #digcitsummit, #BeTheDigitalChange, and #MediaLitWk.

The three themes for the day are Citizenship, Literacy, and Advocacy. The high-energy and inspiring event will be emceed by Kelly Wallace, an award-winning digital journalist and television correspondent. Wallace is a digital correspondent and editor-at-large for CNN, focusing on family, career and work / life balance. Wallace writes in-depth articles and socially sourced stories and does original web videos for CNN Digital Health, Wellness and Parenting section.

"I am thrilled the Digital Citizenship Summit is the official launch event for U.S. Media Literacy Week,” says Michelle Ciulla Lipkin, executive director for the National Association for Media Literacy Education and chairperson for the 28th October flagship event. “The line-up is simply incredible. We are very appreciative of all the hard work from the Digital Citizenship Summit team and those at Twitter who have made it all possible. I am confident the day will be both rewarding and productive."

The Digital Citizenship Summit sets out to create an interesting mix of speakers and panelists that represent the many groups impacted by social media and technology. Some participants include Anne Collier (executive director of The Net Safety Collaborative), Jim Steyer (founder and CEO of Common Sense Media), Tiffany Shlain (award-winning filmmaker and founder of Character Day), Larry Magid (tech journalist and founder and CEO ConnectSafely), digital citizenship pioneers Drs. Jason Ohler and Mike Ribble, and Lynette Owens (founder of Internet Safety for Kids & Families at Trend Micro). The full roster features student leaders, connected educators, parenting experts, authors, media psychologists, and more, while including participants from Australia, Spain, India, Canada, and Ireland.

The Digital Citizenship Summit takes a multi-stakeholder participatory approach to solving some of the complicated issues regarding social media and tech use, such as improving online civility, promoting media literacy, and empowering students to be engaged digital citizens. The Digital Citizenship Institute and Impero Software are releasing a white paper, ‘Digital Citizenship: a Holistic Primer’, at the Digital Citizenship Summit. The paper defines digital citizenship, describes the history, the current status in K-12 schools and higher education, and shares the future of digital citizenship.

Dr. Marialice B.F.X. Curran, co-founder of the Digital Citizenship Summit and founder of the Digital Citizenship Institute, said: “The Digital Citizenship Summit puts words into action and is a day that amplifies multiple voices and perspectives. I am happy that the white paper will be an additional resource to help educators embed digital citizenship into the curriculum upon returning back to their schools and communities after attending the Digital Citizenship Summit.”
