Case study: Manchester SEN school adopts paperless system

One SEN school in Manchester has streamlined its staff’s working days by moving all incident logging and reporting to an online system. Birches Specialist Support Primary School in Didsbury have teamed up with Adaptsoft, whose IRIS Adapt platform has allowed them to modernise beyond logging incidents in bound books, which had involved a great deal of writing up by one member of staff.

IRIS Adapt is a highly customisable online software solution for managing pupil information. It is used by special schools across the UK, and is designed for logging pupil incidents, accidents, injuries, safeguarding concerns and more. This resource has allowed Birches Specialist Support Primary to track and observe trends for pupils and monitor teaching impact, while more readily identifying the most effective strategies for their pupils.

“During the initial set up, we got a lot of help and advice from the providers and found the set-up process very easy and user-friendly,” said Birches headteacher Andy Pitts. “The customisation process was brilliant. We were able to discuss the product thoroughly with the providers, who then tailored it specifically to our needs. We were given the space and time to develop what we wanted from the system; then when we were ready the product was produced very quickly.

“An important factor for us in our choice of solution was the ability to add to and tweak the system as we go along, which this system is designed to do. We have been able to tweak and make changes throughout every step of the process. This has been invaluable in tailoring the software exactly to our needs, making the system as efficient and as effective as it can be. It also means that we have a ‘future-proof’ system that can change and adapt according to our future needs.”

The Birches, a 136 place school, has already installed facilities hydrotherapy pool, a range of outdoor play areas, a sensory garden, two multisensory rooms and two soft play areas. It is the first maintained school in Manchester to be accredited by the National Autistic Society.

Andy added: “It has significantly reduced the time spent logging incidents. Now it takes just minutes to delve into the data and produce graphs and charts for specific children or the school as a whole. We are able to produce individual reports for children and identify trigger points, environmental hotspots, times of the day that prove difficult the child and so on.”
