We are used to deploying technology in schools to support ICT lessons and to help with the general administration of learning. However, many schools don’t get the best value from their ICT investments because they miss out on the cross-curricular engagement factor that some technologies can offer.

Four Oaks Primary School in Liverpool has a higher than average level of equipment, and teaching staff there are enthusiastic users of technology in the classroom. They have also invested in an immersive ‘4D’ room which offers wonderful opportunities to bring lessons to life.

Using our ActiveLens augmented technology with the 4D room, the topic was brought to life with incredible effect, showing pupils an early Mark 1 Landship (the original name for tanks) from the battle of the Somme. From this starting point, pupils were tasked with researching and reporting on the development of the tank through to the Second World War. Using Touchcast on the same iPads, the children developed scripts and green-screened themselves back in time to report on how it would feel to see a monstrous landship lumbering across a shattered no-man’s-land in 1916.

We have seen examples in classrooms across the north-west of where opening a lesson with a bit of tech wow-factor gets pupils engaged in an otherwise dry or boring topic. For Computeam, there is no better wow-factor at present than virtual reality and augmented reality technology, both of which are becoming more powerful and more affordable for schools.

If you are interested in finding out how you can bring immersive technologies like these into your school without spending a fortune, do come along to our free-to-attend conference event on 7th February at ChillFactore in Manchester.
